A Formative Community

Is there a difference between formation and information?

It's a question that people of faith must contend with. At First Baptist we are trying to be intentional about spiritual formation. Our faith demands more than simply knowing the right answers. It demands more than processing spiritual data. It demands that we follow the Christ in whose image we are continually being formed.

The Sunday School hour is our primary time of weekly spiritual formation. This is when you will find small groups for every age... from children to senior adults.  In addition to our regular classes, we offer occasional short-term studies related to a specific issue or book.

With children and youth our emphasis is on helping to shape them into life-long followers of Christ. This shaping occurs as they see the faith lived out in the examples of adult Christians. Each of our students is paired with an adult member of the congregation who serves as a mentor in the student's life. We also believe that it's important for children and youth to see themselves as an integral part of the whole church. That means involving them in worship and looking for ways that they might interact with other age groups.

Our children and youth meet for Sunday School at 9:45.  Our youth group gathers each Sunday evening at 7:00 for prayer, Bible study and discussion. Some of their experiences include youth camp each summer, volunteering at the local hospital, and hosting fellowships after the high school football games.
